Cashmere
A Distinctive Fibre, Valued for Its Softness
Cashmere holds a special place in the world of textiles. Valued for its fineness and soft feel, it is used in both cosy knitwear and lighter garments.
At Mat de Misaine, cashmere features in selected pieces from our collections, particularly when blended with wool or other fibres. These blends allow us to explore different textures and silhouettes, while maintaining the relaxed elegance that defines our Atlantic-inspired wardrobe.
What Is Cashmere?
Cashmere is an animal fibre obtained from the fine undercoat of certain goats. This soft undercoat grows beneath their outer coat and helps protect them from the cold.
After collection, the fibres are sorted and separated from the coarser hairs before being prepared for spinning into yarns and producing textiles.
The fineness of cashmere fibres partly explains their distinctive feel. However, their quality and characteristics can vary depending on their origin, length, fineness and processing methods.
Why Blend Cashmere with Other Fibres?
Cashmere can be used on its own or blended with other textile fibres.
In the Mat de Misaine collections, certain styles combine wool and cashmere. These blends allow us to create knitwear with different appearances, depending on the proportions used, the yarn and the knitting technique.
Cashmere can also be incorporated into fabrics used for garments other than jumpers.
It is important to distinguish between a garment made from 100% cashmere and one containing cashmere. The exact composition is specified on each product page.

Cashmere in the Mat de Misaine Collections
The TOULA Jumper: A Sailor-Inspired Style in Wool and Cashmere
The women’s TOULA jumper reinterprets the traditional sailor-style neckline in a fine knit made from 70% wool and 30% cashmere.
Its loose fit, dropped shoulders and ribbed trims give it a relaxed look. A piece that reflects the maritime influences of Mat de Misaine.
The TISCALI Jumper: A Chunky Knit
With its roll neck, chunky knit and dropped shoulders, the TISCALI jumper offers another interpretation of the wool-cashmere blend.
Its composition combines 90% wool and 10% cashmere. Its straight cut and long sleeves create a silhouette suited to seasonal outfits.
The CUBA Shirt: Cashmere Beyond Knitwear
Cashmere also features in certain shirts from our collections.
The CUBA tunic-style shirt, in its anise green colourway, features a flowing cut, classic collar, patch chest pocket and buttoned cuffs. Its composition includes 6% cashmere.
This example illustrates the variety of garments that can incorporate this fibre, beyond traditional knitwear.

How to Care for Garments Containing Cashmere
Caring for a garment depends on its complete fibre composition, construction and the treatments applied to the fabric. A wool-cashmere blend and a fabric containing a small percentage of cashmere do not necessarily require the same care.
Before washing, it is therefore essential to check the garment’s care label.
A few simple habits can help:
-
Follow the washing temperature and method indicated on the care label.
-
Use a detergent suitable for delicate fabrics when washing with water is permitted.
-
Avoid twisting or rubbing knitted garments vigorously.
-
Follow the specific drying instructions for each garment.
-
Store knitwear clean and dry, preferably folded to help prevent stretching or distortion.
For the TOULA and TISCALI jumpers, the product pages recommend hand washing at a maximum temperature of 30°C and drying flat in the shade.
These instructions should not automatically be applied to every garment containing cashmere.

Can Cashmere Pill?
Yes. Like other textile fibres, cashmere can develop small pills as a result of repeated friction.
This phenomenon depends on factors such as yarn composition, fabric structure and how the garment is worn. Pilling alone is not sufficient to determine the quality of a garment.
If pills appear, they can be carefully removed using a suitable fabric care tool, without pulling on the fibres.
FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About Cashmere
What Is the Difference Between Wool and Cashmere?
Cashmere comes from the fine undercoat of certain goats, while wool generally refers to fibres obtained from sheep’s fleece. Both materials have characteristics that vary depending on their quality and processing methods.
Is a Garment Containing Cashmere Always Made from 100% Cashmere?
No. A garment may contain cashmere blended with wool, cotton or other fibres. The composition on the label specifies the exact percentages.
Can Cashmere Be Machine Washed?
This depends on the garment. Some textiles may allow a suitable machine-washing programme, while others require hand washing or professional cleaning. Always refer to the product’s care label.
Is Cashmere Only Used for Jumpers?
No. This fibre can also be used in shirts, accessories and other garments, depending on the fabrics involved.
How Should You Store a Wool and Cashmere Jumper?
It is generally best to store jumpers clean, completely dry and folded in a place protected from moisture. This helps minimise the risk of garments losing their shape when stored on hangers.
